FAQ
Questions you might have
It is completely normal to have questions before starting therapy. Here are some of the ones I am asked most often.
What happens in the first session?
We discuss what brings you to therapy, review important paperwork, explain confidentiality, answer any questions, and begin understanding your goals. Initial appointments are 90 minutes to allow enough time to do this comfortably.
What is the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling is generally shorter term and focuses on current concerns and practical coping strategies. Psychotherapy explores deeper emotional patterns, relationships, and underlying experiences to support longer term change. We decide together which approach best suits your needs.
Do I need a referral?
No, you can self refer. Referrals from GPs, schools, and other health professionals are also welcome.
Can I claim Medicare?
No. Medicare rebates are not currently available for psychotherapy and counselling services.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. Online appointments are available Australia wide.
How long are appointments?
The initial appointment is 90 minutes. Following appointments are 60 minutes.
What ages do you work with?
Children, adolescents, young adults, adults, and older adults.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. What you share in therapy is kept private and stored securely. There are a small number of legal and ethical limits to confidentiality: if there is a serious and imminent risk of harm to you or another person, if there is a concern about the safety of a child or vulnerable person, or if records are subpoenaed by a court or required by law. Where it is safe and possible to do so, I will always try to discuss any need to share information with you first.
How often should I attend?
This depends on your goals. Most people begin weekly or fortnightly before spacing sessions further apart.
